Silhouettes in Yaumatei Fruit Market 油麻地菓欄的剪影

I was born and brought up in Hong Kong and had never been to the Yaumatie Fruit Market, a historical landmark in the area. In 2010 I returned to Hong Kong and made my first visit on 10 March. The structure of the market has hipped roof which is based on the traditional Chinese building style. There were many wholesale stores inside the market.

It was 3 o'clock in the afternoon and all these stores were closed as workers had finished their transaction in the morning. The market appeared tranquil. At times, a few workers were seen using cart to move boxes of fruits into the market. The afternoon sun casted light and shadows   through the patio on the floor.

I love black & white photos of the old buildings and feel more interested in the changes of light and shadows. This album was made through different cropping from a photo in the attempt to view the beauty of silhouettes, light and shadows inside the market from different angles.  I present these photos in black & white to make them more reminiscing.

我生於香港，長於香港，從未踏足油麻地果欄。直到2010年返港，3月10日第一次進入這座油麻地歷史悠久的地標。建築物是傳統中國式金字頂的結構，內面有許多批發蔬果的店鋪。下午三時許，店舖已完成早上的買賣，所以都關門了，地方顯得冷清。間中有工友用手推車將一箱箱的生果運進果欄。下午的陽光從果欄內的通天透進陽光，使破舊的建築更覺凋零。我鍾情古舊的建築黑白照片，也對光影的變化感興趣。這輯照片，是我嘗試透過裁剪一張照片，用不同的角度去欣賞光線所產生的剪影。我以黑白照片處理以表現懷舊的感覺。

The silhouette of this worker is very attractive.  His posture is charming.  I used the long strip to emphasize the line pattern created by light to make a contrast effect.
這位推著木頭車的工友剪影十分吸引﹐ 他的動作具美感。我利用橫幅表現由光線產生的線條對比。

There are many illegal structures inside the market.  The terrible mess above the building reflects the existence of these old and illegal buildings.

Original photo:  I was attracted by this worker and captured his silhouette.  I learn to look at different part of the market and find out many interesting "images" from different angles of viewpoint.
