Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

【Hong Kong Nostalgia】
I was born and raised in Hong Kong, living in Ngau Chi Wan Village at a young age. The runway of Kai Tak Airport was in close vicinity. As such I am quite impressive with the busy airport and its lengthy runway. At that time, I used to travel from Kwun Tong Ferry Pier to North Point. When the ferry went around the southern end of the Kai Tak runway, I often saw plane and landing aircraft on the runway.

I feel that I have close encounter with the Kai Tak runway on the day I emigrated to Canada by plane in 1988. Though I came back Hong Kong by plane, I was only passing the runway inside the cabin. In the morning of November 29, I had the chance to visit Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, capable of standing right at the centre of the Kai Tak runway, recalling the glory of Kai Tak Airport busy years!

●《Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport》, built in 1925, extending the runway from the foot of Lion Rock Hill, straight towards Kowloon Bay facing Lei Yue Mun. The Airport was closed in July 1998 and moved to Chek Lap Kok of Lantao Island. Subsequently, a large-scale urban development project in areas around Kai Tak Airport was carried out by the Hong Kong government, including the construction of Kai Tak Sports City, Metropolitan Park, cruise terminal, hotel, residential, commercial and entertainment core construction projects with a total planned area of 328 hectares. Located in central south Kai Tak Airport runway to runway tail creates the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Construction work was launched in October 2010. The terminal building and the first berth have already opened in mid-2013. The end of the runway will be built a heliport and the Kai Tak runway Park.

●《Kai Tak Cruise Terminal》 started in 2004.  It began its use in June 2013.  Kai Tak Cruise Terminal is comprised of 3-storey with a total length of 850 meters each. After the completion of the building, the total construction area is 7.6 hectares. The 4-storey building from the ground to the roof, has a total height of 70 meters, the ground level is for the main road and transport facilities, the attic is a parking lot and office, first floor for the immigration hall. The roof is Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Park.

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal has two berths, berth depth of 12-13 meters. The terminal area of 850 meters by 35 meters, can berth up to 455 meters, respectively, and 395 meters of the cruise. The first berth can be used to the displacement of up to 110,000 tons, with a total tonnage of 220,000 tons of world-class cruise ships.

    1. Thanks HongKong Storage! I can see the need of redevelopment of Kwun Tong district which is on the way effectively. It is good to see more companies and new business move in. It is the changing portrait of the older districts that makes our reminiscence more precious and touching!
