Discovery Harbour is located at the Penetanguishene Bay near Midland Township 160km north of Toronto. The British naval and military base has revealed part of the history of the war of 1821 between Britain and the United States. In 1793, Sir John Graves Simcoe discovered Penetangusihene Bay as a suitable strategic base with steep-sided deep water to protect and maintain ships. In 1821, the United States declared war which catalyzed the construction of a naval base in Penetanguishene Bay to make it a strategic outpost and shipyard to guard the flow of supplies and men north to British outposts and First Nations Allies. The Penetanguishene Naval Establishment evolved into a naval and military base to maintain colonial defence. There were no battles occurred at Penetanguishene. In 1856 the naval and military base was turned over to the Canadian government.
Today, the military establishment tells the story of the War in 1812 and lets the visitors understand the naval and military duties in 200 years. The Penetanguishene Bay has a dockyard with the historical warships H.M.S. Bee and H.M.S. Tecumseth anchored for demonstration. The shore has naval barracks, surgeon's office, military cemetery, Commander's quarter, naval survey house, officers' quarters, saw-pit, steam kiln and blacksmith shop etc.
This is a photo record of my first visit to the Discovery Harbour. Recently I visited the Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the guide-tour pamphlet introduced the Discovery Harbor and offered 50% discount off the admission fee for the Sainte-Marie's visitors to visit Discovery Harbour. An effective promotional strategy! Therefore, I know about this naval and military base in Penetanguishene. Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour are just 20 minutes drive from each other. It is a good site worth a visit for learning Canadian history and taking photographs for historical memories.

今天「發現港」的軍事設施，是將200年前的歷史陳蹟在原址重建，讓遊客重溫加拿大當年海陸軍在這軍港的歷史任務。港灣設有造船廠，停泊兩艘當年戰艦的複製品。岸上設有軍營、外科醫生醫務所、軍人墓地、指揮官官邸、海軍測量所、軍官宿舍、鋸木場、蒸汽焙烤窯、鐵工廠等。
這是我初訪「發現港」的攝影記錄，皆緣自參觀桑薘瑪莉民族村時，導遊指南推介了「發現港」，凡出示桑薘瑪莉民族村入門券者，均獲「發現港」入門券半價優惠，這是頗有效的推介策略。因此，我認識了這個具歷史的港灣和軍事基地。由桑薘瑪莉民族村到「發現港」，行車時間祇需20分鐘，喜歡認識加拿大歷史和懷舊攝影的，是值得一遊！
