In 1953, a fire in Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon, made tens of thousands of families homeless. The Hong Kong Government in order to house these refugees, within a short period of time, started the construction of  multi-storey buildings in a nearby hillside of the disaster field. This was the first Hong Kong public housing estate, known as the "Shek Kip Mei Resettlement Area".

The residential buildings in the area were seven-storey of the H-shaped design. The resettlement estate included the construction of industrial buildings, not only providing venues for the light industrial owners to continue the business, but also create appropriate employment opportunities for the residents. The industrial buildings eventually facilitated the booming of the cottage industries in the sixties and seventies.

Since then, the development of the Hong Kong's public housing followed this blueprint. But times have changed, the social environment and housing needs underwent drastic changes. The old-style residential estates faced demolition and innovation. Shek Kip Mei Estate should be cleared. In order to preserve the historical H-type building and factory building with architectural features during the age of resettlement areas, the Government retained the residential building of Block #41 in Shek Kip Mei, and converted it into a youth hostel, named as "Mei Ho House", and innovated an industrial building to become the "Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre" (JCCAC).

JCCAC makes use of the retaining industrial building in Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate. It retains the inside features of the old factory building and was therefore accorded with the Best Features in the annual domestic architectural award by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. JCCAC was opened in 2008 for artists and arts organizations to run arts and cultural activities. This album has captured the Handicraft Fair held in the day of my visit and featured the characteristics of the innovated industrial building and its arts activities.

===========================

  3. Many people visiting JCCAC are attracted by the big and hot events. You are different in a sense that you pay more attention to the little things and capture them with your camera. Great!

    1. Though I have taken photos of the hot and big events, the quiet and creative works of the individual artists also need more attention and appreciation!

  4. My friend, who lived in Li Chang Uk Resettlement Area, said the H-shaped buildings were awarded because it can house a lot of people with minimum material.
