Inspiration at ROM

October 4 was a special day for me as I have enjoyed both music and photography: music gives me relaxation and reminiscence, photography inspires my creativity. I was glad to attend the concert presented by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in Toronto. The concert conducted by the Music Director Yip Wing-sie was highlighted by the sheng (a 2000-year Chinese mouth-organ) soloist Loo Sze-wang in performing composer Chan Hing-yan's music "Twas the Thawing Wind", a North American Premiere.
I remember the latter two who visited Toronto back in the 90s to perform in the inaugural concert of the Toronto Chinese Orchestra. Chan was the conductor, Loo was Sheng soloist and I was an erhu player in the concert. This has gone for nearly 20 odd years. This time, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta performed at the Koerner Hall of the Royal Conservatory of Music, just adjacent to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). I arrived earlier to take photography in the vicinity. The ROM building looks peculiar. The modern style of the new structure was added to the classic and elegant building of the old ROM. Such an advanced architectural style may not be accepted by the public. However, the appearance of geometric patterns has given me photography inspiration and revelation to accomplish this album of photo inspiration.

Photo equipment:
Nikon D300s, Nikon GP-1 GPS
AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED

This is a 3D graphic.  I stood across the street and waited for a long time to select suitable pedestrians until a lady on bicycle came by.  Her shape (circles of the bike) is different from the other people.  She became a focal point of moving object and is the contrast between lines (building) and circles (bicycle), between big and small.
Nikon D300s, 17-55mm, f/2.8 @23mm, f/8, 1/800sec, ISO 1600

Opposite direction (bicycle and passer-by), stillness and movement.
Nikon D300s, 17-55mm, f/2.8 @55mm, f/8, 1/250sec, ISO 1600 (cropped)

I was attracted by their colorful jackets and their expression of standing closely to watch their images on the mirror wall.
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @185mm, f/10, 1/60sec, ISO 1600

At first sigh, there is nothing unusual in his sitting for rest.  Looking closely, I find that there is a tortoise displayed inside the museum.  The man's sitting face-to-face to it creates an interesting association: "Can I have longevity as that of turtle?"
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @170mm, f/10, 1/250sec, ISO 1600

Circles want to enter into the world of lines?
Nikon D300s, 17-55mm, f/2.8 @55mm, f/8, 1/160sec, ISO 1600

Reading Alone vs Me Alone

The shadow of this lady on red clothes reflects on the mirror wall.  I move a bit and adjust my shooting angle until her image is within the window frame. I wait till her best standing posture appears and capture the scene.
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @82mm, f/8, 1/200sec, ISO 1600

While I was having my meal in a fast food shop, I looked through the window and noticed this man standing by the ROM building.  His unique standing posture, the lines behind, a lady passer-by and a cross shape found on the window frame all have formed a very interesting contrasting effect in the combination.  I captured this scene with a tele-zoom lens.
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @116mm, f/8, 1/400sec, ISO 1600

This poster inside the fast food shop has posed a very "strong and heavy" effect in the photo!
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @98mm, f/8, 1/30sec, ISO 1600

It needs patience to shoot the previous photos: wait to see the man's standing and arms' postures. Wait for no other people nearby and no vehicles appear in the scene.
Nikon D300s, 70-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 @70mm, f/18, 1/400sec, ISO 1600

In sunset, my eyes cannot open to face the sunlight but I point my camera to the sun to capture these long shadows of the people.
Nikon D300s, 17-55mm, f/2.8 @17mm, f/11, 1/1000sec, ISO 1600

  3. Having seen your photos on architecture makes me recall a contemporary great architect Mr Norman Foster. Both you are very sensitive to line and shape! Many thanks for showing us the excellent works!
